Ironing Board

« Back to Lexicon Index

Ironing boards are used as forms when pressing fabric. Boards come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They should be lightly padded with heat tolerant fabric- generally a cotton or linen.

Modern ironing boards are typically made from metal mesh, but there are advantages to the older wooden forms. Metal forms dissipate heat more quickly, whereas wooden ones reach higher temperatures and sustain heat longer, allowing more time for shaping fabric correctly.

For a quick pressing a metal backed board may be preferable so long as none of the wrinkles are too badly set, but for tailoring a wooden board will give better results.
