Starch Spray

« Back to Lexicon Index

Starch is used to stiffen fabrics so they hold desirable creases and resist wrinkling. Most commonly starch for ironing is sold in aerosol spray bottles, but any starch will do the same trick.  It’s possible to sprinkle it lightly on a garment before steam pressing, or to make a starch spray for a spray bottle.

Homemade starch spray bottles should be cleaned thoroughly after every use, however, and left to dry empty, because starch in water is an excellent media for growing smelly bacteria and fungi. Spraying stale starch spray onto a garment and then ironing it in can infuse that unpleasant smell into the garment, potentially ruining it.
